On Saturday 27th October volunteers from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints pitched in to paint, weed, and maintain facilities for the Riding for the Disabled Association of Victoria (RDA) in Doveton.
For those living with disabilities, horse riding can provide an increased sense of freedom and independence. The RDA gives people with disabilities of all ages opportunities to achieve their goals and grow in confidence through equestrian activities.
The RDA's Doveton Branch is located at Myuna Farm, a public, community-based farm where adults and children can experience hands-on contact with farm animals and native wildlife. Both Myuna Farm and the RDA rely heavily on the support of volunteers to operate.
The Church group, made up predominantly of 18 to 30 year olds, painted railing for new riding yards and weeded several of the animal enclosures and rock bed drainage areas.
Sergio Balmes, a Church leader commented on the group’s “great energy and enthusiasm as they all worked together and accomplished more than was expected by the Farm.”
Deyna Leausa, a young adult from the Dandenong ward (congregation) of the Narre Warren Stake (diocese) said of the service project, “It’s amazing how giving service to others can have more of an effect on you than them,” she said. “When your heart is in the right place, Heavenly Father will always find a way to ensure that you leave with a smile on your face.”
Steve Hill, Manager of Myuna Farm was grateful for the Church’s support to the RDA and it’s community programs. Steve expressed, “The City of Casey’s vision is to create Australia's most Liveable City and … great volunteer work [such as that provided by] the group at Myuna Farm on Saturday is what will make this happen.”
Saturday's service project was held on an annual ‘Day of Service’ for members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Pacific area, with congregations from across the region partnering with local organisations to provide much needed service within their local communities.
