Members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Brisbane’s western suburbs invited local government representatives to attend a recent stake conference on 11 August 2024. A stake is a group of congregations in a geographical area.
Guests attending the morning gathering before the conference included: Mayor Teresa Harding; The Honourable Milton Dick MP; and The Honourable Charis Mulllen MP.
It was the first time that local government leaders gathered in this type of setting before a stake conference in this part of Brisbane. The purpose was to connect with local leaders and explore how church members can serve with others in the local community.
“It was wonderful to discuss our shared appreciation for one another and commitment to serve our community, who are facing a wide range of challenges and complexities,” said Sister Nicole Lologa, a local Latter-day Saint.
During the gathering, Church leaders shared examples of how members serve in humanitarian efforts, missionary work, and ministering to one another.
Mayor Teresa Harding said, “I am very impressed with the efforts to minister one to another and ask that you be more visible to the community in providing relief to those who are faced with the challenges of the rising cost of living.”
The Honourable Milton Dick MP, Speaker of the House, said, “We are humbled today to be in the presence of leaders who give so much, not just to our community, but to a worldwide organisation. I read recently the Church has given over a billion dollars of aid and support across the globe.”
“We see the work you do across the community. We see the young people who are inspired by your leadership. They are always smiling. That is the first thing I see when I come to this church. I always see people smiling and you can see God’s care and grace in not just the work you do, but in your community work and in your family.”
All the guests expressed appreciation for the invitation to join the conference.
