BYU Wind Symphony Wows Crowds in Sydney

On Friday 4th May, Sydney church and community members were treated to an impressive repertoire of musical pieces performed by the visiting Brigham Young University Wind Symphony at the Chatswood Concourse. Conducted by Dr. Don L. Peterson, the ensemble comprised 50 of the university’s finest woodwind, brass and percussion musicians, accompanied by the Sydney Youth Orchestra, with Patrice Tipoki, well-known musical theatre and recording star, appearing as guest soloist.

The Wind Symphony's repertoire included marches, wind band standards, and contemporary works from a number of Australian and international composers. Patrice (a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints) has a beautiful voice that was featured in several popular songs from celebrated stage musicals. The Wind Symphony has travelled extensively since 1987, performing throughout the United States, Europe and Asia, as well as in Australia and New Zealand.

Deborah Porter, a member of the Assembly Working Group on relations with other faiths for the Uniting Church in Australia similarly expressed her appreciation for the depth and variety of pieces performed in the program. The conductor of the Sydney Youth Orchestra, James Pensini said: “Rarely do we enjoy concert bands of such a high calibre visit Sydney and we are grateful for the opportunity to have collaborated with the [BYU] Wind Symphony this evening”.

President Bardia Paki of the Sydney Australia Harbour Stake (diocese) for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, said of the event: “It was wonderful to host the BYU group. We are grateful for the beautiful music that they shared with us and our friends.
