State Liberal leader and Member for Dunstan, Steven Marshall, visited the Firle Stake Centre of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on 11 June to present a South Australian flag to local Latter-day Saint leader Mr Rainer Korte.
The flag will be displayed at an event hosted by the Church on 8 August as Latter-day Saints and guests celebrate the 175th anniversary of the first missionary of the faith to arrive in Australia, William Barratt.
Hannah, Adam and Isaac Rice (pictured) also were on hand to greet Mr Marshall, along with Michael Neave, Ivy Ting, Sujatha Rice, Caroline McIlwaine and Cassie Scott.
His Excellency the Honourable Hieu Van Le AO, Governor of South Australia, and his wife Mrs Lan Le will participate in the 175th anniversary celebration.
Church leader, Elder Andrew O'Riordan, and several government officials and community leaders will also attend the event.
The event will feature cultural song and dance as well as displays highlighting the diversity of backgrounds enjoyed by South Australians today.
According to Mr Korte, “the momentum is building in anticipation of this unique event.”
"I don't know of any other occasion that we have had Vice Regal, and federal, state and local government involvement with a Church-hosted event in Adelaide,” he said.
"We are really grateful for their interest and support, and look forward to being together with them and our church community and friends in celebrating our great state of South Australia.”
Mr Korte encouraged people to mark their diaries and invite friends to attend.
A community service project is underway in the lead up to the special event, aimed at providing 175 backpacks filled with donated essentials and comfort items for children taken from home in emergency situations.
"This is a worthy cause and a great way to show gratitude for all that we have, by helping others in their need," Mr Korte said.
