Once a week, Latter-day Saint young adult Dayanna Grageda takes time out of her busy study schedule to make sandwiches or bake cupcakes for food parcels that are dispersed throughout Sydney by a Christian charity organisation called Hands and Feet.
Joe Brown is the heart behind Hands and Feet and has a passion for helping people in need. In explaining the idea behind the organisation he remarked, “When I saw a need in the city of Sydney, I decided to come up with a solution. A group of like-minded families came together and we decided there was something we could do.”
What began as purchased fast food meals being given to the hungry 5 ½ years ago, has now grown to serving more than 400 people per week. They each receive food parcels containing a sandwich, baked items, fruit, and a bottle of water.
Some of Dayanna’s friends from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints helped deliver food and other needed items to the homeless during the year. She explained, “I enjoy this service because I can also work with Baptists, born-again Christians, Anglicans and those of other faiths to help provide for the needs of the homeless.”
"The best way to forget about your own worries is to focus on someone else's needs," Dayanna adds.
A person can experience spiritual hunger as well as physical hunger. As Jesus did, we can offer both kinds of nourishment if we are observant and are willing to give a portion of our time or means. We can follow His teaching, “For I was an hungered, and ye gave me meat.”
