On Sundays Thomas Reid and his wife Sonya teach the five-year-olds in their church. During the week, they take care of their own five children, and he works as a businessman and entrepreneur.
His business savvy took him this month to Mexico City to join with some 300 other entrepreneurs from around the world at the G20 Young Entrepreneurs Summit 2012.
He and the other delegates brainstormed on economic solutions to stimulate business growth, create jobs, and improve conditions in the twenty countries they represented.
Reid told his fellow delegates in Mexico City, “Today belongs to the solution finder, to those who prefer to be accountable to the world, who are the standard of excellence, who forgive and move on, who want to leave a legacy of integrity and good.”
“There is an increased need for innovative thinking combined with inspired action to handle the challenges that plague our world,” Reid says.
With such an approach Reid has seen several of his business dreams become a reality. He also finds time to mentor other young entrepreneurs.
As a child, Reid says, he saw the world as a place of opportunity. He took on a paper route at age nine, and with hard work increased his percentages of success and his intake of tips within a matter of days.
“The experience empowered me,” he says, “and increased my confidence.”
“By age fifteen I could see that I did not have to be subject to the social, cultural and learning difficulties that disturbed my childhood. I found that I could take control of my life.”
After finishing high school and playing representative basketball in Sydney, Reid began taking spiritual matters very seriously and started searching for truth in various religions. His investigation led him to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He would spend two years as a full-time missionary in Perth before setting his business dreams in motion.
Notwithstanding Reid’s focus on innovating and working to achieve excellent business results, he says the most important mentoring he does is with his wife, Sonya—with their children. The most important successes they are working towards are within the walls of their home.
