Interfaith Youth Build Bridges of Understanding

Sharing beliefs and learning of commonalities help youth of various religions build bridges of understanding during Faith Matters Week in Adelaide.

Muslim Sada Sheka, Catholic Grace Frick and Latter-day Saint Rory Pilkington are among the 100 young adults who participated in this interfaith gathering designed to build a more cohesive community.

Youth visited various places of worship across Adelaide, including the Al Khalil Mosque, St. Francis Xavier Cathedral, the Sikh Gurudwara at Prospect, Saint Aidan’s Anglican Church at Payneham and the Progressive Jewish Synagogue at Hackney.

“Just spending time with each other helps break down a few barriers,” said Caroline McIllwaine, organiser of Faith Matters Week hosted by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Supported by many SA faith leaders, the Faith Matters Week interfaith youth group will also assemble street packs for the charity RuFus which supports Adelaide’s homeless. By helping others, these young adults experience the satisfaction of service and working together.

“I quickly learned how much I have in common with young people from other religions,” said Rory Pilkington.

Faith Matters Week is an important bridge for various religions to connect and strengthen faith and community.
