A new meetinghouse for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to be built in the Ipswich suburb of Augustine Heights "will be beautiful and will bring people together to worship," according to Ipswich mayor, Paul Pisasale.
Mayor Pisasale was speaking at a 15 August ground-breaking service attended by over 200 people including church and community leaders.
President of the Church's Brisbane Australia Centenary Stake, Adam Hannant, told guests: “The building will be a beacon to the community where people can come and learn how to raise happy families that last forever.”
A Latter-day Saint "stake" is a group of congregations in a geographical location.
Brisbane Australia Temple president, Grant Pitman, also spoke at the ground-breaking service. He recounted some of the history of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Ipswich area.
There are over 140,000 Latter-day Saints in Australia who worship in around 300 congregations.
The Augustine Heights building will be approximately 2000 square metres in size and will include a chapel for worship services, classrooms, and a recreation hall for sporting and cultural events.
When the meetinghouse is completed it will be open to members of the Church and others interested in attending worship services and other meetings and activities.
