Melbourne Latter-day Saints "Light the World - One by One"

Members and friends of the Heidelberg Stake (diocese) of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints recently joined the church's global initiative to "Light the World" during this Christmas season. On Sunday 1st December 2019 more than 500 people attended the Fairfield Chapel where they enjoyed a narrative and musical presentation about the birth of the Savior Jesus Christ.

Darice Dudfield, director of the event remarked, "Our Light the World event provided a wonderful opportunity for everyone who attended to get into the spirit of Christmas. Not only was it an enjoyable evening filled with events such as feeding the homeless, a visit to old Jerusalem and worship through words and music, but it was an evening to reflect on the significance of the birth of the Saviour Jesus Christ and all that he has done for us."

To continue the Christmas spirit, parts of the building had been transformed with decorations, montages and displays representing the themes of Christmas. One of the event coordinators, Alayne Stuart explained, "We were hoping to create an environment where people's thoughts could be lifted to the true meaning of Christmas. It was wonderful to hear so many people say that they felt that their hearts had been touched".

Donations were collected from across the Stake in the weeks leading up to the event that included  backpacks with personal items we felt useful for someone on the streets, as well as blankets and non- perishable food items. Louisa Linford-Corps who assisted in facilitating the donations, commented on the generosity of church, community members and a local charity in their contributions. She commented, "Church members Brother and Sister McCarthy run a charity called CANTOA, and we were thrilled to help support them in their initiative to help the homeless and those in need".

As a lead up to, and during the event, cards were made, gifts wrapped, blankets made and backpacks filled, specifically for items that may be useful for someone living on the streets.

Louisa continued, "We feel so blessed to have played even the smallest part in helping to alleviate the suffering of these beautiful and humble people. We may not be able to change the world, but I love the fact we can light it "One by One. What a great start to the Christmas Season."
