New Mayor Seeks to Serve in Faith

Latter-day Saint Cynthia Watson was recently elected unopposed to the role of Mayor for the Boroondara Council in East Melbourne.

As part of the official ceremony, the chains of office were placed around her neck, a large gold chain inscribed with the names of all 23 past mayors.

Having served in her local community in various roles for over 20 years, Cynthia saw an opportunity within her local council to fulfil her desire to do more good within her community.

“All past experiences that I have had come to the table, whether it is in my role as a mother, or in a leadership capacity”, she remarked.

As a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, she made the observation that her faith serves as a foundation for her motivations for serving others.

“It’s about creating a community, “she says, “and virtue is at the heart of good communities. My faith is a really important asset.”

The new mayor encourages and invites others to do the same, in becoming a part of, and serving in their local communities.

“When more people get involved and serve one another, the whole community benefits. It’s richly rewarding.”
