Jayden Cecil, a Brisbane, Australia native will be joining the Utah Prep Academy varsity basketball team as a 15-year-old freshman. Utah Prep Academy offers a nationally ranked athletic program coupled with top tier academics.
Jayden, a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, said, “Being a member of the Church of Jesus Christ helps me when I’m playing. I know that my Heavenly Father is right by my side and that I’m not playing alone.”
“I’m excited for what’s ahead for me and my family. Moving across the world is a big change, but I think we are ready and prepared. I’m ready for the new opportunity that is coming.”
Standing at 6’ 3”, he will be joining an elite squad of top ranked basketball players. He has earned respect both on and off the court because of his dedication to the game and his teammates.
“I travelled to China recently to play in a tournament with the boys from Utah Prep. Throughout our travels, I began to see others who lived like me. So, I needed to get some questions answered. As we started talking, I learned that two or three boys have the same faith I do. They are members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Our relationship will make a difference in my life ahead,” Jayden said.
As he heads to the USA, he will be competing against the best high school talent in the country on a national schedule, further establishing his place among elite basketball prospects.
Jayden said, “I stay grounded by recognising that the Holy Ghost is with me. I am always surrounded by a lot of people, in basketball, that have no idea what that means. But I still need to stay true to myself and my beliefs and act the way Heavenly Father would want me to act.”
“It helps to attend church, take the sacrament, and go to the temple. Saying daily prayers is a big thing for me. It keeps my connection strong to Heavenly Father. Giving Him thanks for the daily things that happen is important.”
The story of Jayden’s journey from Brisbane to one of America’s top high school basketball programs showcases the increasing global impact of Australian talent in the sport. His path is a testament to the hard work, dedication, and skill that Australian athletes bring to the international stage.
