On Monday 23 April, more than 110 people representing members from the Jewish, Bahai faiths, the Uniting Church, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as well as community volunteers participated in the cleaning and polishing of 1,700 Honour Plaques in preparation for ANZAC Day celebrations in Kings Park, Perth.
"It is commendable that the LDS Church has for the 8th year in succession brought together other faiths and the general community in this most noteworthy project," remarked Mr Rod Halcombe, representing the Honour Avenue Group of the Returned & Services League (RSL) of Australia (Western Australia Branch).
Mr Halcombe said, “These plaques mark those of our service men and women who have fallen in service of their country and it is only fitting that we as citizens of this country play our part in tribute to their memories.”
“In that regard,– it is so important to perpetuate and kindle the ANZAC spirit amongst our younger up and coming generation,” added Mr Halcombe.
The service project concluded with a social get-together over a lunch-time sausage sizzle in Kings Park followed by games for the children. Many volunteers commented on the success of the event and hoped to be involved again in the future.
Only a few days later an estimated crowd of 30,000 would gather at the Kings Park State War Memorial in for the annual Anzac day dawn service in which members of the Church participated in a Maori Haka.
