FamilySearch, the world’s largest genealogical organization, announced recently it will host a worldwide indexing event from 7-14 August.
According to FamilySearch.org, indexing creates “searchable digital indexes for scanned images of historical documents. The documents are drawn primarily from a collection of 2.4 million rolls of microfilm containing photographic images of historical documents from 110 countries and principalities. The documents include census records, birth and death certificates, marriage licenses, military and property records, and other vital records maintained by local, state, and national governments.”
Volunteers from around the world take part in indexing on FamilySearch.org, and the August event will provide a week-long opportunity for experienced indexers and beginners to contribute to the global effort.
FamilySearch resources, including access to billions of genealogical records, are provided by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and is free to the public.
Over the years FamilySearch staff and volunteers have worked with archives, libraries and churches in over 100 countries to facilitate access to records that help people find their ancestors.
The indexing event for 2015 is called “Fuel the Find” and is hoping to reach a new record for the number of volunteers involved in an indexing event.
