300 young members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints enthralled a packed auditorium in Sydney recently with a performance titled: “The Evolution of Music.” Special guest at the extravaganza was Hon David Clarke MLC.

The audience of over 1000 people was taken down memory lane with popular music from the 1940’s big band era to a grand finale featuring a song from this year’s pop charts. Each decade was expressed through a dramatic large group production number and two dazzling small ensembles in period costume.
Artists on the piano, violin and guitar were spotlighted, and gifted impersonators portrayed The Andrew Sisters, Elvis Presley, and The Supremes.
Directors Dorothy DeCorso and Lisa Howard are pros at stage shows. But their passion is talent development. To the few participants who feared they could not sing and dance Dorothy said, “Just get out there on the floor. You were given talents you don’t yet know you have.” She was right — often those ended up teaching the choreography.
Lisa Howard explains, “The talent on stage was supported by an equally talented team of young people who spent hours choreographing, sewing, building sets and running rehearsals.”
Elder Terence Vinson, Area Seventy of the Church, in closing remarks, expressed the complete delight felt by the audience and said, “Let us remember who gave us these talents, and let’s make sure this work continues.”
The performers and crew live all over New South Wales and prepared for twelve weeks. The Gillian Moore Centre for Performing Arts at Pymble Ladies College was the setting for the event.
