A new feature-length movie titled ‘Meet the Mormons’ is now scheduled for showing in theatres and Church buildings around the country.
The 78 minutes documentary, produced by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, was written and directed by American film-maker Blair Treu.
It profiles six members of the Church (sometimes called “Mormons”) from various backgrounds and walks of life.
A portion of the proceeds from the screenings in theatres will go to local charities chosen by Church public affairs councils in the areas in which they will be shown.
“There is a rich tapestry of Christian faith throughout the world, including many denominations which were operating long before the Mormons came onto the scene in the early 1800s,” said Alan Wakeley, the Church’s Public Affairs Department adviser for Australia and Papua New Guinea. “Each has contributed much to the development of the values which underlay the legal and political systems of western nations.
“As an emerging faith, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is now also making great contributions to society both in the broader sense and in local communities.
“One of our priorities is to encourage people to be true to their own religious values and to be active in their own churches. We also want to encourage people to make their families the highest priority in their lives. And, most importantly, we are working to ensure that all people are able to worship freely and without intrusion by conflicting secular values.
“The movie, ‘Meet the Mormons’, shows how six Church members are making those sorts of contributions. It will help those who are not familiar with the Church to understand a little more of what really makes us tick.”
