The Melton & Moorabool Star Weekly reports that members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Melton will be participating in the Billion Graves project to identify and photograph graves. Billion Graves is a crowdsourcing initiative using modern technology (smartphones, tablets, iPads, etc.) to document gravesites around the world. When written cemetery records have been lost, headstones often provide valuable family history information.
Church member David Cowan said of the project, “It’s particularly good because you don’t have to travel around the world to find the grave of a family member. Being able to collect the records and do your family history is really important because it helps identify where we came from, who we are … and it helps us get a better understanding of our families.” You can read the whole story here and learn more about Billion Graves here and here.
