Churches Join Voices to Spread Christmas Cheer

More than 70 carollers from various Christian churches joined together at the Princess Alexandra Hospital last Wednesday to sing Christmas carols and bring Christmas cheer to the patients and staff at the hospital.

The annual event was organised by the hospital's pastoral care unit and attended by various Christian denominations. Churches that joined together included members of the Catholic Church, the Salvation Army, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the Uniting Church, the Anglican Church and the Christian Missionary Alliance Church.  Many community music groups also joined in.

Over 500 patients and staff in 20 hospital wards were visited by the carollers during the evening, bringing warm smiles and laughter wherever they went.

A patient’s family member in the BIRU (Brain Injury Rehabilitation Unit) who was visiting at the time, enjoyed the opportunity to join in the carolling and was very pleased to have a chance to be involved in a community Christmas Event. They mentioned how difficult this can be when you have family in a hospital on a long-term basis.

Rev'd Canon Cheryl Selvage, the pastoral care coordinator at the hospital, said of the event: "It's a lovely opportunity to bring peace and happiness into the lives of our patients and staff."

In addition to Christmas carolling, the pastoral care unit organises many other events throughout the year to support patients at the hospital. Members of the public are encouraged to participate.
