Approximately 200 attendees gathered to celebrate religious harmony through prayer, singing, talks, visual presentations, turban tying, and food at Cardinia Interfaith Network’s annual A Taste of Faith event, Outlook Community Centre, Pakenham.
Performances featured members of Islam, Sikhism, Baha’ism and various Christian denominations. MC Graeme Legge and guest of honour, Cardinia Shire Mayor Collin Ross, also addressed the audience which included Federal MP, Jason Wood.
Cardinia Interfaith Network committee members, Gaven and Sara Ferguson of the Pakenham Ward (congregation) of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, acted as greeters for the event with a women and children’s choir performing Janice Kapp Perry’s A Child’s Prayer, conducted by Sarah Imms.
Accompanist Sharon Park introduced the group by saying, “We have chosen this song to represent religious harmony because, as the saying goes, “Prayer is our key to heaven” and we can find love and understanding as we pray.”
Cardinia Interfaith Network was founded in 2011 “to build relationships of respect, understanding and acceptance between people of all faiths, beliefs, cultures and traditions in the Cardinia Shire Community” as the vision statement attests.
Of A Taste of Faith 2018, Sarah Imms said, ‘It went really well. It’s the first time I’ve been to such an event. It was really interesting to learn about the other religions and see that they’re all based on common principles of love and harmony, contrary to what we see in the media.’
