Errol Fernando says table tennis is a great form of exercise, lots of fun, and a way to serve others.
Mr. Fernando started playing table tennis at the age of 10 in his native Sri Lanka before moving to Australia in the 1970’s.
He is actively engaged in his community, coaching and mentoring young table tennis players in his neighborhood and at local schools. He is also involved in his local church congregation, sharing his talents with others wherever he can.
“I have learned,” he said, “being a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, that serving others, and sharing my talents with them, is one way I can serve Jesus Christ, and follow His example.”
Mr Fernando, from Wheelers Hill in Melbourne’s east, recently beat players from China, Malaysia, Singapore, Vietnam and Hong Kong to win a table tennis tournament at the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre.
He now has his sights set on Asian championships to be held in Singapore and Malaysia in September of this year.
