Do you recall learning about the origins of your family members? Did they come on the first fleet as a convict or free settler? Did they come from one of the vast cultures that make-up Australia or do they consist of the "Dream Time" that have benn passed down through generations over thousands of years?

Members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Gosford, assisted by the Central Coast Family History Society, hosted a Family Discovery Day where families in the local community gathered to learn about the impressive online resources that are available to help individuals uncover their ancestor’s journeys and family history. The event attracted more than 200 attendees and included activities such as workshops and training sessions on Family Search records, introduction to family trees and tips for collaborating with others when using online family trees.

Latter-day Saint member and event organiser Kate Walter regularly attends family history groups within the Gosford area. Kate expressed, “I felt it was of great importance in helping people understand that there are these amazing online resources that can help people discover their family’s journey. Especially for the many young people who are still finding their way in the world who may not know of the great qualities or achievements that exist within their family’s history.”

Dallin Jarvis, public relations director of the Gosford Stake (diocese), explained that Latter-day Saints believe family relationships can perpetuate beyond this life; therefore, it is essential to nurture strong family relationships, including connecting ourselves with our deceased ancestors. Dallin commented, “Family History work provides you with the opportunity to reconnect with your family of the past, present and future. We all have a family story – who we are and where we came from. For members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, learning about one’s family history serves a deep and meaningful purpose.”

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints operates Family History Centres in various locations that are free and open to the local community for the purpose of helping them discover their family’s story.
