Preparing for the Special Olympics

The Australian National Special Olympic Games are being held in Adelaide from 16-20 April 2018. To assist with the many preparations underway, youth from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints offered their time and service.

Young men and young women (aged 12-18) and their leaders from the Marion and Firle Stakes (dioceses) attended the Special Olympics home base of operations at Sports SA, in West Beach during March and April.

The youth packed various bags for the athletes, sorted and prepared the participation ribbons that are to be awarded to all of the athletes, and prepared lanyards for identification badges. David Swaine, the volunteer coordinator, and his colleagues were thrilled to see the young people willing to pitch in and help their cause. They were also very impressed about the amount of work that was done.

“It was great to be there and watch my children serving with others helping to prepare these items for others to use," reported Kathy Stabler. "While it did not seem a major thing, it was important to help the Special Olympics go ahead.”
