“When there’s a need, especially for young people and you can fill it, then why not?” asks Louella Jury, wife, mother and active community member from Glen Huon, Tasmania.
Motivated by a love of music, the needs of her family and other young people, Louella accompanies, composes, and directs several choirs in the Huon Valley.
She helps share the joy of music wherever possible. “Those who participate and perform experience the thrill of being part of something bigger than themselves,” comments Louella.
In 2015 she was inspired to compose the piece entitled “I Will Remember” which commemorated the 100-year anniversary of the ANZAC arrival at Gallipoli. The piece has been performed at various ANZAC ceremonies and services and sung by all ages.
The Licorice Allsorts Choir (LA Choir), directed by Louella since 2004 also benefits from her special gifts.
This cross-generational choir regularly performs at aged care facilities and community events.
“I especially love seeing how children learn to serve others through their talents. They create such an environment of happiness and fun for everyone – plus they sound terrific!” Louella exclaims.
After a performance at a facility, choir members have the opportunity to interact with the residents. “This is where the real connections take place” Louella explains.
“Older people are touched by the music and grateful to spend time with the members of the choir and simply chat” says Louella. “Tender relationships are made and everyone benefits.”
In addition to the LA Choir, Louella regularly writes and directs music for the local Huon Valley Theatre group. As composer of ‘Pride and Prejudice – A New Musical’ Louella shared her talents to sell out audiences in Hobart in 2016. Part of the proceeds from the productions have been donated to the Leukemia Cancer Foundation, Cancer Council Tasmania and the children’s ward of Royal Hobart Hospital.
Louella is manager of a small family business with her husband Steve and currently serves on an advisory committee in strategic planning with the local High School and Huonville Business Group.
Building positive memories, sharing talents, making connections and experiencing growth through service are teachings of Christ that Louella has embraced as a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
As a wife and mother of five children, Louella seeks ways to bring into their lives “whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report.” (Philippians 4:8)
“When we focus on the bigger picture, that we matter and give each other purpose, then God’s light is able to shine through us, says Louella. "And why not scatter His sunshine?”
