Wyndham Stake Community Cleanup Day

This month saw the passing of Australian legend, Ian Kiernan, who founded the 'Clean Up' Australia campaign in 1989. His legacy continues as people around Australia take time to clean up neighborhoods. That is what happened in Melton this past Saturday.

As part of the Pacific Day of Service this past weekend, more than 80 members of the Wyndham Stake (diocese) of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, from four different wards (congregations) across the stake met at the Melton Chapel at 8:30am Saturday 27th October. They donned their yellow "Helping Hands" vests and worked in groups to ‘clean up’ part of their area in Melton. Helpers were aged between 8 and 72.

Those participating picked up rubbish along High Street, around Westlake and along the Arnold’s Creek Reserve. These three areas were designated for clean up efforts by the staff from the Melton Council. Within three hours over 50 large bags of rubbish were collected along with other larger items.

Massey Toi, from the stake said, "We had a great turnout especialy the night after our Stake Ball. They had plenty of energy, so we sent them out to do some work and burn up that last bit. They were all willing and able and put in a great effort."

Participants were well-rewarded with watermelon and hotdogs as they gathered at the end of the clean-up.
